PRDA Design Four

Welcome to PRDA Task #4, where us designer-types were given the challenge of "Design a Fairy related to an element".

At first. I was sort of disappointed, since that sort of challenge is destined to call to mind costume and tinkerbells the world over. So I sat on it. And sat. And sat. And then I decided that I would go all Sailor Moon and choose an element that wasn't necessarily an "element". If this challenge is my last... at least I went out with SPARKLE.

The only way I think to get that gradient is to paint silk, and that has a nice drape to it. I textured the bodice to add a little interest. Hidden behind the bias-cut purple silk swirls (oh man, those would all be hand stitching. I'd die.) at the bust-line is a push-up bra built in. I thought a dress like this needed a little more oompf.

The colors are very 'night sky' for me, and I added the crystal jewelry to represent the night sky. If I was really clever while constructing this, I'd hide white LEDs in the larger pendants on the bodice, bracelets etc. to add to the illusion of light.

My goal, as always, is to design something wearable. I haven't done an evening gown in this competition, so I thought that it would be a good choice to do so for this particular challenge. Short dresses, for me, conjure up tragic fairy costumes on Halloween, you know?
